HELMET IMPACT SENSOR
Impact Detect partnered with a leading Motocross helmet manufacturer in the United States to develop a motocross helmet sensor with a key objective being collecting global impact data in the sport and increasing awareness of mild traumatic brain injuries and repeated helmet impacts.
THE REQUIREMENT
Our client, a motocross helmet manufacturer, were keen to gain more awareness around brain injuries in motocross with a view to improve safety and awareness for head injuries in the sport.
The requirement included not only recording all impact data, but having it available for instant review as impacts happened.
The solution needed to be small and lightweight enough to be retrofitted in a motocross helmet so discreetly that a rider wouldn’t feel like it was there.
THE SOLUTION
We developed a helmet impact sensor that is retrofitted within the helmets of motocross riders. The sensor has been created to record any helmet impacts over threshold for ongoing review.
The device was developed to have an extended battery life whilst having the ability to record and store multiple impacts. The device casing was developed to not impair rider comfort or performance.
An app and cloud based database were developed for the instant review of impact data and the analysis of historical impact data.
THE OUTCOME
The helmet impact sensor is a small and lightweight device, housed in a polymer that can withstand extreme temperatures, whilst being malleable enough to be retrofitted in a motocross helmet without compromise to the wearers comfort.
The motocross rider in able to create a user profile via the app that we developed, to view a list of all historical impact data for their helmet, by connecting to their helmet device using BLE. Each time the impact data is downloaded a report including GPS location of the rider is generated in a cloud based impact analysis system.
Ongoing development will include an updated mobile phone application that allows the rider to log their emergency contacts and also gives them the ability to send out an SOS via the app if required via the mobile phones GSM network.
The impact data app and database has allowed a more global view of impacts in motocross and trends and safety hazards are being identified as more data is gathered.
